Does a picture paint a thousand words? It can certainly help and you are able to add a wide range of file types, including images, into your Moodle course.

While Moodle was designed for interactive online learning, it is possible to upload and share files in a course. Files may easily be dragged and dropped into a course. However, this uses up your storage allowance so Moodle allows you to use sensible workaround alternatives such as Cloud storage like Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and Youtube.

Your Moodle for School site will have a storage allowance of between 200 MB and 1GB, depending on the package plan you have purchased. This can be also used up quickly if you have students upload a lot of media files in assignments or if teachers upload lecture presentations. Maximum file upload sizes can be set if needed.

Getting files into Moodle

You can specify the ways in which files can be shared on the site from Site administration.

  • The four main repositories which you will probably wish to keep enabled are:
    • Upload a file - an alternative way to upload files instead of drag and drop.
    • Recent files - the last 50 files a user has uploaded to Moodle. (You can change the number.)
    • Server files - files available in other courses a teacher has access to. (As admin you have access to everything.)
    • Wikimedia
  • You may want to think about allowing each user their own personal storage space. It is enabled by default but it will add to your site limit.
  • It is possible to easily link directly to your files on Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and Youtube. However, if you want a slightly more technically complex connection with these sites, please check out our Repositories guide
