How often have we enthusiastically picked up a new skill or better technique firstly from watching an expert demonstrate it?

Sound and video can often convey understanding quicker and easier then plain text by itself. Moodle easily handles many different types of sound and video files. If you are uncertain about the best ones to use, we recommend using mp3 files for sound and mp4 for video.

Remember that a large number of uploaded media files can use up a lot of your file space. Hence, consider embedding them from external sources, such as Youtube, instead.

How to embed from Youtube

  1. Turn on the editing with the button or the link in the Course administration block
  2. In the desired section, click "Add an activity or resource" and select a Label if you wish to show the media directly on the course page or Page if you wish students to click to view the embedded media. (Choosing Page is better if you expect to be displaying a lot of videos, as displaying a series of them directly in the course could slow down the load time.)
  3. If you know  the URL of the Youtube video, paste it in and and save the label or page. The video will appear embedded.
  4. If you don't know the URL, click the media icon in the editor; click YouTube and search for a video. When you select it, the video will appear as a link. When you save the label or page, the video will appear embedded.
